WHAT IS TMJ?
TMJ is an acronym for the temporomandibular joint that is composed of the jaw bone and the temporal bone of the skull located just in from your ears.
WHAT CAUSES TMJ?
TMJ dysfunction can be the result of excessive repetitive movement of the jaw (chewing gum/grinding teeth), tight musculature of the neck, and improper jaw alignment, or even due to trauma.
HOW WILL PRO THERAPY TREAT MY TMJ?
To begin TMJ pain treatment, our Northern Mississippi therapists at Pro Therapy will first start by searching for the root of the problem. Once the underlying cause is identified then treatment can be modified directly to that patient. Skilled physical therapy treatment consists of manual stretches to the jaw and neck, therapeutic exercise to promote proper jaw/neck alignment, joint mobilization techniques, patient education, dry needling, pain management, and possibly use of a night guard for the mouth. With conservative PT treatment and use of home exercise program TMJ dysfunction can be alleviated and surgery can be avoided. Don’t let TMJ run your life.
