WHAT ARE COMMON CAUSES FOR FALLS IN THE ELDERLY?
Factors that increase the risk of falls in the geriatric population include: decreased flexibility, decreased strength, break down of the bones in the legs and spine, and change of gait patterns secondary to a lack of regular physical activity. This can be magnified if coupled with neurological disorders such as a stroke, spinal cord injury, or traumatic brain injury. The elderly population are at an increased risk for fractures with possible morbidity if they suffer a fall, therefore prevention of falls is vital.
WHAT CAN I DO TO PREVENT FALLS FROM HAPPENING?
Fall risk prevention methods addressed with physical therapy can include: manual stretches to promote proper posture, manual stretches to the legs to promote proper gait training, home modification, patient education, balance activities to increase proprioception, and use of regular exercise to keep the large muscles of the legs and spine strong which promote proper body mechanics while performing sit to stand and gait activities. Home modifications to reduce fall risk includes: no rugs/cords/shoes lying in the floor, avoid small pets that could get under your feet, install grab bars around toilet/shower, also, after lying down sit up for few minutes before coming to stand.
