26 Jan How to Get the Most Out of Your Personal Trainer
Hiring a personal trainer is an exciting and empowering step in your fitness journey. Whether you want to tone muscle, shed fat, or become a better runner, having a professional in your corner is the best way to start. Since you are making an investment in your future, you want to do everything you can to get the most out of your time with the trainer. Here are our top 7 tips on getting the most of this time.
1. Set Goals: Before your first session, set clear and realistic goals. What do you want to gain (or lose) from these sessions?
2. Be on time: Promptness is exceptionally important here. Personal trainers are normally booked back to back. Rather than losing those extra minutes, show up on time and prepared.
3. Be open to trying new things: Everyone has an idea of what they want, but remember that you are working with a professional. Trust and respect their opinion. They know what they are doing.
4. Find the right match: Some personalities just don’t go well together. If you are quiet and introverted, then a loud, bossy and ostentatious trainer might not be the best fit for you. Have a few meetings or trial runs with different trainers to see if your personalities are the right match.
5. Communicate: If you are hurting, tell them! Don’t suffer in silence. Also, if you are uncomfortable with a certain move, ask if there is another way to work out that specific muscle group. The most important part of any relationship is communication.
6. Don’t leave it all up to the trainer: Your personal trainer can’t do everything. Be proactive. Eat properly. Sleep the appropriate amount of time. Drink lots of water. Be sure you are doing your part outside of the gym.
7. Ask questions: This is what every trainer wants. Ask why, what, how, and when. Ask for homework. Ask as many questions as you can think of. Believe us, as personal trainers, we are at ease knowing you will come to us with your questions.
