19 Aug Choosing the Right Backpack for Your Child
With school starting this week, your kiddos are likely sporting the latest trends. But don’t get so caught up in trends you forget about finding a backpacks that will prevent back troubles later. We have a few tips for you when purchasing a new backpack for the school year.
– Structure: We have all seen those flimsy bags that seem to have books falling out of the bottom. Don’t buy one of those, even if the price is right. Try to find ones made with sturdy materials that hold the shape of a normal pack even when empty.
– Straps: The best packs have two shoulder straps. This reduces the amount of stress placed on the child’s neck, shoulders, and back. Look for packs with curved, padded shoulder straps. Also, sternum and waist straps are great additions to your child’s pack. These help distribute the stress of the pack evenly.
– Fit: Your child needs to be with you when you are looking for a new backpack. The top of the pack should be 1 to 2 inches below the top of the shoulders and the bottom should hit right at the lower back. If the pack doesn’t do this, it doesn’t fit properly. The weight of the pack should rest on the lower back.
– Reflective: We all want to protect our children. Have packs with reflective features is great for children walking home after school or even crossing a road.
– Weight: According to the American Academy of Pediatrics, your child should be carrying no more than 10% to 20% of his or her body weight. If you child leans forward while carrying the pack, it is too heavy.
