    Torticollis

    WHAT IS TORTICOLLIS?

Torticollis is known as a condition where the muscles within the neck become tight which results in the neck twisting to one side. Torticollis is most commonly seen in children ages from birth to 3 months and even adults in certain instances. Parents may notice the baby will hold head to one side, typically seen in photos over time.

    WHAT CAUSES TORTICOLLIS?

The cause could likely be positioning. Parents should always check for normal alignment of the head while the child is positioned in the carseat and any other seating or mats during play and/or sleeping.  One will most commonly have symptoms such as the chin being pulled toward the shoulder. Other symptoms include limited neck range of motion, recurring headaches, and/or tenderness on the affected side.

WHEN SHOULD I SEE A NORTHERN MISSISSIPPI PHYSICAL THERAPIST?

Torticollis neck pain is quite often treated with conservative treatment with physical therapy (PT). PT often includes stretching, positioning, strengthening of weakened and stretched musculature and range of motion throughout the neck. If this condition is not addressed, it may become so severe that it could cause difficulty feeding including reflux and delay in mobility for a baby. Other torticollis treatment options would include injections.
