    Life In The Fast Lane

    I have written in previous articles that the easiest and quickest way to lose weight is to increase overall activity and cutting calories by making healthy food choices. Weight loss would be easy if we had the time to work out 1 hour or more everyday and had time to cook a healthy meal each night, but most of us have very busy lives and are crunched for time. Some days we do have extra time to exercise as long as we want and time to make a nice meal, but what are we to do when we only have a few minutes.

    When time is scarce, make the most of your exercise routine by increasing intensity and have fewer rest breaks. Also, do full body workouts that include large muscle groups to burn more calories instead of isolated small muscle group movement such as: bicep curls, tricep extensions, and leg curls. These exercises burn few calories and are not very functional; I mean how many times throughout the day are you lying on your stomach and lifting weights by bending your knee like when exercising on the leg curl machine.

    Examples of large muscle group exercises and compound movement exercises are: pushups, pull ups, squats, squat then shoulder press, lunges, dead lift, and kettle bell swings are just a few examples. Compound movements like these burn more calories, are more functional and simulate real world activities, improve balance, and allows a full body workout quicker.
